One thing most shooters who train with and carry their AR’s on a regular basis agree with is that lighter is better. Fortunately, that was the specialty of Daniel Defense.

The first thing to look at when cutting down on the ounces is the barrel profile. Not only do you reduce weight in an AR with a lighter weight barrel, you change the balance point of the rifle by taking the weight off the front. In the fall of 2014, we were meeting with executives at Daniel Defense and the discussion turned to light weight carbines. At that time they were just announcing the new SLIM Keymod rail system. We asked them to build us the lightest weight carbine they could that would not be a NFA (short barrel rifle) item. The result is the Lipsey’s Exclusive DDM4 Super Lightweight or SLW for short.

The lightweight 14.5” barrel combined with the 12” SLIM Keymod rail make for a carbine that is easy to carry and quick for target acquisition. The mid length gas system combined with the 14.5” barrel length make for a very soft shooting setup that is easy to keep on target. To make this a non-NFA item, Daniel Defense pins and welds their extended flash hider to make for an overall length of 16”. The rest of the SLW is pure Daniel Defense, with their signature furniture, Mil-Spec components, and industry leading cold hammer forged barrels.

Lightweight, easy to handle right out of the box.

One note about Daniel Defense barrels. They make them in house and are unique in that they hammer forge both the barrel and chamber at the same time. The usual method is to hammer forge the barrel then cut the chamber separately. By doing the barrel and chamber together, Daniel Defense insures nothing will be slightly off.
